Hemingway Special (Alcoholic Ordinary Drink Cocktail glass)

The Hemingway Special is named after Ernest Hemingway, which means this drink has literary credentials, a complicated relationship with masculinity, and probably some opinions about bullfighting. But unlike Papa himself, who was not exactly known for being light and refreshing, this cocktail is both of those things and more. It's the kind of drink that makes you feel worldly and sophisticated while simultaneously being incredibly easy to drink, which is a very rare and dangerous combination.

Rum is the star of the show here, and it brings that warm, sugarcane swagger that makes you want to tell stories that start with "This one time in Havana..." even if the furthest south you've ever been is a Chipotle in Orlando. Then grapefruit juice crashes in with its signature bitter-sweet personality, the flavor equivalent of that friend who gives brutally honest advice but you love them for it anyway. It's sharp, it's bright, and it keeps the rum from getting too comfortable. Maraschino liqueur is the wildcard — this stuff is made from cherries but doesn't taste anything like the neon red cherries on a sundae. It's nutty, slightly sweet, and deeply mysterious, like a character actor who shows up in one scene and steals the entire movie. Finally, lime juice ties everything together with its electric acidity, making sure every sip finishes clean and snappy.

What you end up with is a drink that's almost aggressively balanced — tart without being sour, sweet without being cloying, and complex without being pretentious. It's the kind of cocktail that makes you sit up straighter and enunciate more clearly, as if the drink itself is peer-pressuring you into being a more interesting person. Hemingway apparently liked his drinks strong and not too sweet, and this cocktail follows that philosophy while still being genuinely delicious, which is more than you can say for most of his life advice.

Every sip tells a story, and isn't that what good writing — and good drinking — is all about? Just maybe don't challenge anyone to a fistfight after a couple of these. Papa would, but you are not Papa.
